Oliver Hernandez Caballero, 25, of Damascus, was charged with two counts of first-degree child abuse, the Montgomery County Police Department said.

Investigators say the child was taken to Shady Grove Hospital with eating and breathing difficulties after being home alone with Caballero around 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28.

The child was then taken to the Children’s National Medical Center due to “severe and unexplained injuries to the head and body,” police said.

The SVID-Child Abuse and Sex Assault Unit launched a follow-up investigation on a tip from Child Protective Services.

Detectives believe Caballero abused the child and caused the injuries. He was arrested on a warrant on Monday, Jan. 8 and is being held without bond.
